  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter for the filling
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt for the filling
  • 8 oz softened cream cheese for the frosting
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter for the frosting
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar for the frosting
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract for the frosting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, combine warm milk and water. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit until frothy. Mix in flour, sugar, cocoa powder, eggs, soft butter, food coloring, and vanilla extract until combined.
  2. Knead the Dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl to rise until doubled in size.
  3. Make the Filling: Blend softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
  4. Roll Out the Dough: After rising, roll out into a rectangle and spread filling evenly.
  5. Shape and Cut the Rolls: Roll tightly into a log shape and slice into equal pieces. Place in a greased baking dish to rise again.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Frost Your Rolls: Beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth; add powdered sugar gradually until fluffy. Spread over warm rolls.
